Silver Fern design wins referendum to become New Zealand’s new flag

New Zealand has confirmed that the black, white and blue Silver Fern flag design has won a referendum to become the new flag.

The flag was designed by architect Kyle Lockwood, and his other design in red and blue came in a close second. The Silver Fern flag was named a preliminary winner on Friday but this final result factors in late and overseas votes. According to New Zealand’s election commission, around 1.5 million votes were cast in the referendum with a vote turn out of 49%.

The controversial Red Peak design which was added to the shortlist at the last minute due to its popularity on social media came in third place.

A second referendum will be held in March to decide whether New Zealand will adopt the new flag or keep the current one.
