New Quentin Blake work for Art on the Underground announces "London is Open for Summer"

Illustrator Quentin Blake has created a new illustration as part of the London is Open Campaign. The image will be used on posters to appear in over 240 stations across the tube network from Friday (11 August). Art on the Underground, who commissioned the work, says that the illustration “encapsulates Sir Quentin Blake’s view of the vibrancy and open spirit of London, encouraging children and families to enjoy all the capital has to offer over summer.”

“I did a drawing last year for the ‘London is Open’ evening at the Science Museum” says the artist. “So when I heard that there was an invitation for artists to put forward proposals to publicise the same idea this year, I put everything else aside and did it immediately.”

The poster forms part of a wider campaign that will celebrate the events, sights and shows across London this summer. Last year the London is Open campaign saw works by the likes of Jeremy Deller, Mark Titchner and David Shrigley distributed for free at tube stations across the city.
