The 2018 Pirelli calendar has been unveiled, featuring an all-black cast photographed by Tim Walker and inspired by Alice In Wonderland

Styled by the newly appointed British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, the calendar features Naomi Campbell as the Royal Beheader, model Duckie Thot as Alice, Adwoa Aboah as Tweedledee and Ru Paul as the Queen of Hearts. The calendar captures “the surreal world of dreams,” says Pirelli on the Alice In Wonderland theme. “Inspired by this fantastic narrative, Tim Walker’s images are tableaux vivants full of allusions to unlikely situations, to illusory proverbs, cited with a constant reference to English culture.”

The Pirelli calendar has regularly acted as a piece of photographic commentary. Both the 2016 and 2017 editions featured a completely female line-up, shot by Annie Leibovitz and latterly Peter Lindbergh. The Pirelli calendar first featured an all-black cast in 1987, even including a 16-year-old Naomi Campbell. However, a need to champion diversity is even more relevant today, and as Tim Walker explains, “it’s never been done before. Alice has never been told like this”.
