Nick Knight and Mary Katrantzou collaborate on a striking fashion film

Date
31 July 2015

What happens when you take Nick Knight – the British photographer, filmmaker and founder of avant-garde publisher SHOWstudio – and present him with fashion designer Mary Katrantzou’s rich archive, containing eight years’ worth of boundary-pushing design? Magic happens, is the answer, and it amalgamates in the form of a six minute short film, There’s Something About Mary, which is being debuted in full on SHOWstudio this morning.

Mary’s eclectic and extensive visual language is transformed into something utterly new when paired with Nick’s lens, where computer-generated imagery and three-dimensional graphics play off the digital techniques at work in the garments. It’s something like a mad dash through a wonderland in which nothing is quite as it seems, and it serves as a positive affirmation of the revolutionary influence of digital techniques in both design and filmmaking.
