Martin Roth, who was formerly the director at the Victoria and Albert Museum for five years, has died aged 62.

The V&A announced the news via its website this morning.

“We are extremely saddened to hear that Dr. Martin Roth has died,” Nicholas Coleridge CBE, Chairman, V&A said in a press statement. “Martin will be remembered as a man of prodigious energy; a director with a global reputation both within the museum world and beyond; a committed Europhile and cultural ambassador with a philosophical turn of mind, as well as a devoted husband and father.”

“We will greatly miss Martin, and are profoundly grateful for his considerable contribution to the V&A.”

During his time at the V&A, Martin Roth was instrumental in raising the museum’s overseas profile, founding the V&A Research Institute, contributing to the opening of the European Galleries 1600-1815 and the V&A Exhibition Road Quarter and for a selection of hugely successful exhibitions, David Bowie Is, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, Disobedient Objects and Engineering the World: Ove Arup. During Martin’s directorship, the V&A was named 2016 Art Fund Museum of the Year.

Martin left his job at the V&A last autumn.
