Impact of Brexit on the creative industries to be subject of government inquiry

The UK government’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee has launched an inquiry into the impact of Brexit on the creative industries, tourism and the digital single market.

The committee is asking for written evidence on issues that might be affected by the UK leaving the EU, such as employment and attracting talent from abroad, intellectual property and funding. You can send your views using a submissions page, with a deadline of 28 October 2016.

As part of its call for submissions, the government poses questions such as: “Will the UK be able to attract and retain talent from across the world in order to maintain its high reputation in these industries?” and “What should happen in relation to copyright after the UK leaves the EU?”

It also asks how the loss of European Union funding, both specialised (such as the Creative Europe fund) and more general (such as the Regional Development Fund) will affect the industry, and how that gap will be filled, from government funding or tax exemptions to private sponsorship.

Damian Collins MP, acting chair of the committee says in a statement: “The creative industries and tourism are two of the most important sectors in our economy, and we have to make sure that Brexit can become a success for them… we want to hear from people and organisations in the creative and tourism sectors on any concerns or ideas they may have relating to Brexit.”
