Artist Heather Phillipson has won the Film London Jarman Award, given annually to a UK-based artist for experimentation in moving image. The award, held at the Whitechapel Gallery, has a £10,000 prize and all shortlisted artists will be commissioned to make a Random Acts films for Channel 4.

Heather creates immersive films merging sculptural installations and with audio and text, which often require the viewer’s interaction or exploration. For her video Final Days she transformed disused shops in New York and Sheffield into an 18-screen video installation that “commented on the disembodied experience of shopping”.

She is currently showing work in New York’s New Museum, Iceland’s Cycle Festival of Music and Art and Sāo Paulo Biennale. Adrian Wootton, chief executive of Film London and the British Film Commission says Heather’s work is “complex, anarchic and deftly views global events through a very personal lens. She collages images, sounds and words with the sense of pacing and rhythm as you might expect from someone who is also a poet and musician”. Her Vimeo page shows many of her film series.

The shortlist comprised artists Sophia Al Maria, Cécile B. Evans, Shona Illingworth, Mikhail Karikis and Rachel Maclean.

Previously shortlisted artists including Laure Prouvost, Elizabeth Price, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Duncan Campbell, James Richards and Luke Fowler went on to be shortlisted for or to win the Turner Prize.
