London foundry Fontsmith has produced an in-depth glossary of typography jargon in infographic format. The artwork details almost 80 terms with diagrams in a simple grey and green colour scheme, with titles and descriptions underneath with Fontsmith’s new typeface FS Aldrin.

The dictionary of typography starts with “anti-aliasing” and ends with “x-height,” explaining all the nitty gritty a type enthusiast could ask for in one place. The infographic began as a small research project to illustrate key words used everyday at Fontsmith’s own studio, but the list grew quickly, explains type design director Phil Garnham.

“As type designers we can get immersed in an insular typographical bubble at times. It’s easy to forget that our language, the lingo, words and terms that we use to discuss, critique and refine our designs is under the constant pressure of discourse and scrutiny within, often redefining itself.”

The infographic is available to download for free and use as a reference, and share as long as Fontsmith is credited.
