Assemble and Granby Workshop: Splatware

Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble has partnered with architectural ceramics studio Granby Workshop in order to create a range of multi-coloured ceramic tableware. The range will first be made available as a limited-edition reward for backers of a Kickstarter which aims to reach a goal of £40,000 by 5 October 2017. Granby Workshop is a community-orientated business that grew out of Assemble’s award-winning Granby Four Streets project to rebuild the near derelict neighbourhood in Liverpool. The Workshop quickly established a playful reputation after developing techniques such as “smoking handles in a BBQ and making fireplaces out of rubble.”

Splatware will be the latest range in a series of products that sees the Workshop utilising industrial technology alongside its experimental approach in order to push the boundaries of what it can create. In this case, Splatware was invented by experimenting with an industrial hydraulic press, combining different coloured clays in a mould under extreme pressure. The resulting cups and plates feature “accidental and unpredictable” patterns of colour in each piece, meaning that each one is different. The range aims to continue their rejuvenation of the area and re-enforce Granby’s sense of community by encouraging communal eating and drinking.

As part of a unique collaboration with Kickstarter, Assemble and Granby Workshop will also be staging an installation showcasing Splatware at designjunction from 21 – 24 September 2017.
Pledges can be made towards the Kickstarter until 5 October 2017.
