British sculptor Anish Kapoor joins Instagram with project dedicated to dirty corners

Instagram is fast becoming an interesting space for artists today, and Anish Kapoor is the latest to join the generation of older artists on the image-driven social platform, alongside figures like Ai Weiwei and Richard Prince. The British sculptor made his social media debut last week under the handle @dirty_corner, which doubles as the title of the 60-metre steel tube sculpture installed in the gardens of Versailles earlier this summer, and vandalised shortly after.

The Instagram account showcases an ongoing photography series that is as literal as it sounds, documenting sculptural compositions found in grubby city corners. Corners have been a recurring motif in Kapoor’s practice, most notably in works like his dynamic sculpture Shooting Into the Corners which sees a canon firing red wax into the corner of the gallery.

The Dirty Corner project marks both Kapoor’s first foray into social media, and the first time he has shown photographic work publicly.
