It’s Nice That has collaborated with Amsterdam-based eyewear brand Ace & Tate on a new sunglasses collection for 2016. Known for their simple approach to design and emphasis on quality, Ace & Tate has previously collaborated with Berlin-based design studio New Tendency on a frame.
For our collection, we’ve created a chunky, versatile frame in an exclusive colourway. To accompany our unisex sunglasses that can be worn year-round, we’ve commissioned Oregon-based artist Howard Fonda to create a bold and vibrant print to emulate the breeziness of the summer months. For the moodier atmosphere of autumn and winter, we’ve asked illustrator Louisa Gagliardi (one of our Ones to Watch 2016) to design an artwork that echoes the darker months of the year. Reflecting the changing mood of the seasons, each artwork will be printed as two separate lens cloths and two limited edition Litho print posters.
To help bring our collection to life we’ve commissioned photographer and director Ryan Hopkinson with art director and set designer Andrew Stellitano to create a series of sleek campaign shots for the collection. Previously the pair have separately created work for Tom Ford, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, AnOther, Nike, The V&A and Apple, but have worked together on personal projects including their series Strokes from earlier in the year.
For the shoot Ryan and Andrew drew inspiration from a familiar visual anomaly. “Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that shapes the mind’s perception to create familiar patterns from shapes, shadows or light,” explain the pair. “This phenomenon is usually associated with faces and figures, for instance being able to see animals in cloud formations. This was our starting point and we’ve created a series of three images that evoke a stylised pareidolia.” A silhouetted profile abstractly mimics the tide and this minimal set is the anchor for our sunglasses. A mix of cerulean hues and stark white background, contrast well with the dark shadows cast by our frames and this fresh aesthetic embodies our collection as a whole.
