Things #10: A female-focused zine, three great artists and an apple with eyes. Voilà!

The rain is quite literally lashing down like something out of the Bible as I write this so it only seems appropriate that we counteract the miserable weather with bright, insightful and inspiring creative efforts from a few of the industry’s bests. The Protein Journal, as fronted by Es Devlin, is keeping good company with issue #2 of One of my Kind, a female-focused zine devoted to the wonders of printing, with a selection of delightful postcards, monographs of three incredibly well-known artists and one Australian photographer’s glossy new book in the mix. To be read with the curtains closed, with the intention of keeping them that way until July is here. Good luck with that.

One of my Kind: Issue #2 Print

It’s been at least a couple of weeks since we last brought you a zine as part of our weekly Things round-up, a couple of weeks being a long time considering how partial we are to them, so we thought One of my Kind would be a nice reminder of how great independent publishing can be. Focusing on “the imaginations, creativity and spirituality of women,” the second issue is all about the wonderful world of print, including bits by the Guerrilla Girls, Soraya Syed, Sara Salem and Rosie Martin. Reading it feels a bit like food for the soul.

Catherine Ingram, Andrew Rae and Peter Arkle: This Is…

Art monographs, like well-made magazines and notebooks, can never take up too much room on your bookshelves, and it’s with this universal truth in mind that Laurence King have just released a new series of them entitled This Is…. The first three, about Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali and Jackson Pollock respectively, provide detailed and fascinating overviews of their subjects, complete with brilliant illustrations and original work. They also come with these excellent neon totes, and frankly if a tote doesn’t do it for you nothing will.

Don’t Just Tell Them, Show Them insists Jesse Marlow’s new book, a giant, glossy yellow beast of a publication that stays truer to its word than you could possibly imagine. Australia-based Jesse Marlow is a documentary and travel photographer, and this series of images is largely a reaction to situations he comes across in his daily travels, juxtaposing urbanity, banality and the daily ritual to come up with something quite striking. Here’s an imager-maker with a brilliant knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Postcards: Letterproeftuin

The very charming and quite tall Jaron from Letterproeftuin popped in this week to chat to us about their Smallest Printing Company, which we posted about not too long ago, and to our child-like delight he brought these wonderful postcards with him. We’ve duly stuck them up around the studio for pleasant surprises at every corner, but hold a special affection for the apple with eyes. Who can blame us? It’s an apple, with eyes!

Protein Journal: Issue #12

Protein Journal is now on its 12th issue (12! Can you believe it? They grow up so fast) and to mark the occasion they’ve focused the new issue on the subject of work – in particular the way in which 20 and 30-somethings are creating their own jobs in the face of a dire economic climate. If you don’t think this sounds exciting, think again; it includes an interview with Here 2013 speaker and prolific set designer Es Devlin, illustrations by Viktor Hachmang and a great feature about the kids of today being the coders of tomorrow.
