Meet Sanchit Sawaria, the “dedicated generalist” with a love of lettering

Looking through Sanchit Sawaria eclectic portfolio, you’ll come across a whole range of projects and disciplines, from 3D renders and face filters to album covers. This is because Sanchit is what he describes as a “dedicated generalist”. An individual who can “find joy in any brief”, it’s exactly this ability to smoothly jump between subject and style that keeps him interested and invested in his work.

But while Sanchit may love this cross-disciplinary approach, he does have a “special love” for the craft of lettering. “Lettering flexes both ends,” Sanchit says. “It warrants system thinking while also allowing you to get lost in the detailed work of crafting letters and sculpting forms.” Inspired by people not directly linked to the arts, Sanchit finds great pleasure in transmitting the theories and insights of famous philosophers and thinkers into his type work. Here at It’s Nice That, we’re pretty in awe of Sanchit’s New York Times commission, in which he created a typographic illustration for an interview between novelist Geetanjali Shree and translator Daisy Rockwell. The beautiful interconnected, hand-scripted image references the Hindi idiomatic expression “Tedhi Kheer” and the difficulty of translating ideas across languages.
