Roger Brown

Date

Symmetrical hills, identical houses with the odd bedroom light on here and there, no clutter, no litter, no dirt: this is the sort of utopian landscape you can expect to find in a Roger Brown painting. As one of the key members of the post-war Chicago imagists, Brown is currently exhibiting pieces at London’s Thomas Dane Gallery (showing until November 26) among works by his contemporaries. Urging us to question how we perceive the earth around us, as tourists or as inhabitants, Brown’s dusky pieces speak of a time and place we are strangely familiar with, yet have never experienced.
