New video celebrates the mix of cultures, and dancing, essential for keeping the UK going

With neon busts, a ceramic tiger, a flashing cross, modernist and postmodern furniture, and a golden, glittering sort-of monument to a pineapple; the setting for Storm – musician and producer Salute’s new video, directed by Raine Allen-Miller – could not be more of a joyous ode to the mix of cultures so essential to the UK, its health as a nation and cultural output.

Of the video, Raine says: “Britain is currently undergoing a time of national instability, a severance that is still very sore. The media portrays an island of selfish hands grabbing at the last scraps of what they see as ‘their Britain.’ This video is a celebration of the incomparable mix of cultures and the unique blend of people that makes this country so incredible, what makes Great Britain so great.”

In Storm, a family return from church for what could be suggested is a weekly routine – quite literally – where the matriarch dances, framed by an astoundingly symmetrical living room, in front of her disinterested family. Raine says: “I really like the idea that she just does this every Sunday, it’s her thing, it’s so normal to them that they barely notice. The dad taking the biscuit is one of my favourite bits, he doesn’t even look at her – that was the rule with the cast. Having the brother come in was a way of getting more movement in there, and a way of emphasising how care-free the mother is. They are arguing over a Gameboy (the guy playing it is actually the music producer, Salute!) while their mum is going crazy in a Union Jack dress. I like the weirdness of it.”

Storm was produced with Somesuch and is Raine’s first directing credit – setting the bar for what she does next very high.
