New book celebrates printed matter at Leipzig’s Academy of Fine Arts

Out of Print, published by Leipzig’s Academy of Fine Arts, presents ten projects per issue from its archive of student work. Markus Dreßen, the book’s editor and the school’s graphic design professor, says: “With a group of students we look back at our archive and select projects that are not only brilliant but have their optimum form being reproduced in print. Our best multimedia projects won’t be featured in Out of Print because print is the focus of the publication.”

In the first edition, ten projects representing type design, system design, illustration and typography are presented in chapters bound separately in 16-page sections, and glued together on the spine, highlighting both the separations and continuity inherent to Out of Print. A variety of print methods are used: “Some were printed in the school’s printshop. We had the specimens of fonts designed by one of our students – Pierre Pané-Farré, which were printed with letterpress using the clichés of rainbow-coloured printing. The focus was to reproduce the projects in the best possible way, in a faithful representation of printmaking, drawing and book typography” says Markus.

The endpapers between each student’s work and on the covers is marbled paper designed by the school’s alum Aurelia Markwalder, the colours separated and printed in three colours for each join. Out of Print celebrates the character of the school, the mix of disciplines, independence, skill and strong teaching personalities and styles.
