Natacha Paschal’s “deformed” interpretations of mag covers and fashion ads

Artist Natacha Paschal re-appropriates glossy magazine covers, fashion imagery and adverts by painting her own “deformed” versions with wonky faces and bemused expressions. After studying graphic design, Natacha took to painting for a different pace of making work.

Her artworks address mainstream culture with humour but there’s a depth to her naively constructed paintings. “I love exaggerating faces, postures, showing how ridiculous those situations can be and the representations of women’s bodies in our society,” the artist explains. “I’m not looking for traditional ideas of beauty, I like my characters to have bad teeth or awry faces. I’m not at all interested in the ‘well-made’.”

Natacha uses existing sources for all of her works and she enjoys barely recognising the original when she finishes her own interpretation. “It’s all about the attraction/repulsion side of this world for me, fascinating and revolting people at the same time,” she says. Natasha is brash with her colour choice and bold in her brushstrokes, which adds to the chaotic energy of her work. The artist sticks to block colours and defined eyes to help her characters stand out.

An exhibition of Natacha’s work is currently on show at Galerie Treize-dix in Paris.
