Last month we held an evening of talks at Mother London to showcase some of our favourite creative projects made possible through crowdfunding site Kickstarter. Since it launched in 2009, it’s no exaggeration to say the organisation has changed the way the creative world works and it was great to hear from some of those who had made the most of the new opportunities Kickstarter offers.

First up we heard from Kickstarter’s international partnerships lead Stephanie Pereira who gave us some background to the organisation and a run down of some of the remarkable projects created via the site. Stephanie was followed by Sam Barclay, a graphic designer who used Kickstarter to print his book I Wonder What It’s Like To Be Dyslexic, which used visual tricks to give readers the sense of what dyslexic people see when they look at printed text.

Sam was followed by Kelly Angood, who told us she had funded “two and a half projects” through Kickstarter (one attempt was cancelled due to some legal wrangling). Nonetheless her Pop-Up Pinhole cameras have been a huge hit and won an army of admirers. The final speaker was photographer Luke Stephenson who used Kickstarter to fund his project 99 × 99s, wherein he documented the iconic ice-cream at different locations across the UK.

All the speakers spoke about the own experiences and drew insightful conclusions about how best to approach a Kickstarter campaign, from the importance of press coverage and the challenges of maintaining momentum to the logistical onslaught of delivering the finished products and the joys of building a like-minded community.

Thanks to all our speakers, to everyone who came along and the fine folk at Kickstarter.
