Photographer Kent Andreasen on touring with Christian Tiger School

What happens on tour stays on tour — until you invite a photographer along for the ride. So it was when South African snapper Kent Andreasen joined Cape Town musical duo Christian Tiger School on the road in Europe.

“I met the dudes (Luc Vermeer and Sebastiano Zanasi) from Christian Tiger School way back, probably about eight or nine years ago,” Kent tells It’s Nice That. “I went to school with Sebby who is one half of the group but we weren’t really buddies back then. When we first met both my photography and their music were at the stage where we were still trying to work out where we were going with things. So we collaborated on stuff because our timelines matched and slowly things progressed. They built momentum over the first few months of making music and got invited on a tour up country to Johannesburg. They stupidly invited me to come along to take photographs,” Kent laughs.

Touring may sound glamorous to the uninitiated, but as Kent explains, it tends to fall short of your lofty daydreams. “I was excited as hell until I rocked up the morning we were meant to leave and saw that we would travelling the 18 hour journey in a Citi Golf,” Kent explains, revelling in the bathos of it all. “Did I mention that is with all the gear and with their manager Aaron Peters and our buddy Young Supreme? It was a testing time for all of us but we had a really great trip. Since then we have worked on a few things and this last tour was kind of a nostalgic trip that we went on because we both have progressed and it was nice to be able to see where we were now in a our careers and where we had come from. So yeah I went along made images again and had a bit of fun.”

Among Kent’s favourite locations during the tour was The Old Church in London where “we had quite a small audience but it worked perfectly for that environment.” Elsewhere, Kent and Christian Tiger School found Barcelona’s Sonar festival a big moment. “There’s a very special energy that the city has over those few days. We were lucky enough to spend a few days in the city before the show, breaking bread and drinking cheap sangria.”

“Besides losing everything that could possibly be lost on Ubers, the tour was a success,” the photographer summarised.
