Jonathan Niclaus illustrates the light shining through Antti Lovag’s architecture

Jonathan Niclaus has a knack for creating delicate and narratively driven editorial illustrations. His cinematic pieces for Lost iN we have championed previously, but in a new series for Say Hi To the illustrator creates work inspired by architecture.

“With the series I wanted to create an homage to Pierre Cardin’s famous Palais Bulles designed by Hungarian architect Antti Lovag,” Jonathan tells It’s Nice That. “I felt very inspired by the organic shapes – depending on light and time of the day, the buildings create a magical atmosphere seemingly not from this planet.”

The result is a collection of pastel coloured geometric and circular patterned illustrations. They resemble the buildings that inspired Jonathan but take on a life of their own, appearing like otherworldly tunnels of inviting collage. The illustrator’s understanding and application of an extensive colour palette highlights the different elements of each piece. Shades of blue represent flowing water, replicating the light that falls over the building that Jonathan describes. “For my illustrations I wanted to focus on the play of light, shadows and reflection affecting the individual appearance of the building.”
