Friday Mixtape: Goat Girl make us a mix for long, monotonous journeys

Date
25 August 2017

This week’s Friday Mixtape is by South London band Goat Girl, and is curated by vocalist, Clottie Cream. Goat Girl have already caused a stir with their single, Country Tease and their second, Crows Cries released today (25 August 2017) promises to do the same.

The Rough Trade Records signees have gained themselves a cult following for paving their own way as key counterparts to the growing South London music scene. Centred around the infamous Brixton Windmill venue, they started by putting on their own shows with friends, in a supportive environment that has placed hope back into the longevity of London venues and upcoming talent.

Over to Clottie Cream to tell us more about her mixtape and Goat Girl’s new single.

Why have you picked these songs?

This mixtape is a combination of some of my favourite songs, old and new. Each one has some kind of meaning in terms of triggering a specific memory or emotion. For example Bright Black Morning Light reminds me of the first time I heard this band painting in the studio with my friend and the feeling of fulfilment it gave me, both sonically and visually. Also recent memories, such as watching Beak> at a festival and seeing their set unfold into one of the most exciting experiences of music I’ve had in a long time. I think I also chose these songs as they lead quite well into one another, maintaining a certain feeling when I listen through.

When or where should this mixtape be listened to?

I guess in a situation that involves zoning out, maybe in some kind of monotonous way. On long train journeys, motorway drives, procrastinating, etc.

Can you tell us about your new single?

Crow Cries hints at new sounds we’ve been exploring in the studio with our album which we feel showcases a higher sense of experimentation to our last release. I wrote the song ages ago, from the perspective of a crow flying around the area that I live in. I tried to convey the emotions felt when discovering places and events for the first time and materialise that into a birds brain, maybe to escape the first person’s perspective I try and avoid using.

What posters did you have on your bedroom wall when you were younger?

Poster’s on my wall probably consisted of footballers from Crystal Place Football Club, which pretty much occupied my whole life when I was younger.

What records have you been listening to while recording?

An album I’ve had on repeat recently, and probably through the recording process, was Naran Ratan – Trees. I found this album from the record label Tasty Morsels. Mostly everything they release is great and I also really respect their ethos of being a non-profit website as all albums are free downloads. I admire this as I think it insights appreciation for the music itself, rather than its probability.

If a film about Goat Girl was to be made, what song would play on the trailer?

I guess it would have to be Toxic by Britney Spears. It’s just a great song.
