The collaboration between Bureau Borsche and Laurel Halo sees two creative endeavours manipulate what their respective mediums can be. For Berlin-based musician Laurel it is combining the electronic and the classical into an attractively strange album. To represent this creatively, Bureau Borsche reevaluate the form in which a CD or LP can take shape.
“We worked closely with Laurel Halo and Hyperdub on the artwork,” Bureau Borsche tells It’s Nice That. “Grainy photos from photographer Phillip Aumann contrasting the bold yellow and typography, on the cover, we edited the type into the picture, to keep the layout as simple as possible.” However, the true gem of its design is inside, “you have an illustration with all of the lyrics from the album, the album is foldable, which makes it like a poster, like the inside of an old audio tape.”
The mix of typographic styles across Laurel Halo’s campaign sees teardrop shaped bubble fonts contrast against a bold sans serif type. “The type mix is contrasting itself, and gives the idea of a modern hippie vibe – we went on to making a music video for Laurel’s single, Jelly, making the illustration 3D, with a camera following the lyrics like a rollercoaster, it also is capable as a karaoke video,” says Bureau Borsche. “Here also the graphic reference was the audi tapes band,” displaying how a creative music campaign with clearly structured concept can work across multiple platforms.
