Andy Rementer shows us the process behind his hand-painted Nice poster

For the latest issue of Printed Pages, illustrator Andy Rementer created a special edition poster using hand-painted symbols and type, that are simple yet vibrant and packed with charisma. It’s the kind of grin-inducing aesthetic we’ve come to expect from the American artist over years of admiring his work.

“I really wanted to make an image with a bold and graphic look,” Andy explains. “Since it’s a poster I feel it needed to have a simplicity that might make it pleasant to see hanging on your wall each day.”

The illustrator was given a loose brief by It’s Nice That to create a typographic poster using the hand-painting techniques shown in some of his previous signage work, while evolving that style. “This worked well for me as I typically look to my own sketchbooks for inspiration anyway,” he says.

“While studying typography at university I learned how to paint letterforms using a flat-edged brush, like the Ancient Romans did. Using that same sensibility, I can graphically translate and simplify my visual world. I really like the results.”

As for depicting the word “Nice”, Andy explains his inspiration: “It’s Nice That is one of my go-to references for all things cultural and creative. I kind of associate it as part of my daily routine, so I wanted to express that in a graphic way. I get dressed, I drink a coffee, I draw, I check It’s Nice That.”

Andy Rementer’s Nice litho poster, plus lots of other freebies, comes with Printed Pages only if bought through Company of Parrots.
