Alexandre Louvenaz’s big-eyed characters are curious and endlessly naive

The Lyon-based artist has created a world of gifs and short films that eschew the natural, while taking inspiration from our everyday behaviours.

Alexandre Louvenaz often refers to himself by the moniker, ‘Fantastic 3D Creation’. The computer graphics artist, director and Greenhouse-represented animator has become known for his short films, that are never without astute observations of how we interact with one another and our surroundings.

Over the years, Alexandre has gone from creating static video game-like depictions that showcase his characters in a more interactive setting, to creating a wealth of surrealist animations, seizing his characters in moments of absurd mundanity. Like in his film Jamir at Home, a satirical animation film created for Adult Swim in 2019. These characters often possess eyes that look fit to droop right out of their sockets, rubber stretchy limbs that make Mrs Incredible look stiff, and a certain awkwardness as they navigate their locale – in short they often feel as if they’re born just yesterday. His uncanny universe can often be explained by his “passion for surrealism”, use of glitch and the asynchronicity of the sound and imagery, alongside his reverence for the history of video gaming. All in all, his aesthetic is distinctive, but also playful to the point that there’s no telling just how far he’ll go.
